While creating a budget build is getting quite a bit easier due to the natural drop in pricing over time but that just increases the number of options you have to consider. Aren’t purchase decisions grand?

The AMD Athlon II X3 440 3GHz processor makes a good case with its highly clocked triple core setup that should be friendly to both single threaded and multi-threaded applications without breaking the bank. TechwareLabs has the review:

AMD’s Athlon series is geared at those looking for a good machine at a great value. It’s not their cutting edge, but it’s not their low end. It’s a happy medium. The Athlon series is designed for multimedia entertainment, multitasking, and productivity. This, however, does not mean you can’t play some games with them, which you can see towards the end of the testing section. The Athlon II 440 x3 is listed at just $89.

Considering just a few dollars separates highly clocked dual and triple core chips from quad cores you’ve got some serious pondering ahead of you.
