The Tech Report ran a few tests on performance with different audio solutions on the Source game engine, from the fine folks at Valve Software. The results aren’t surprising, hardware acceleration will be faster than software most of the time but it is wise to point out that VIA Envy based cards can be found for as little as $30USD compared to Creative boards which can top out at $200.
